Academy of Emergency Care in Sport
The Academy of Emergency Care in Sport was formed to provide training with national qualifications to those who offer “Immediate Emergency care” at sporting events. The Academy is based in the Emergency Medicine Department of Cork University Hospital. There are a range of courses on offer from Introductory Level to Advanced and Instructor Training.

Emergency Care in Sport – Level 1
Emergency Care in Sport Level 1 training is held in conjunction with the Academy of Emergency Care in Sport. This course is available to those involved in organised sports/physical groups. Course content includes:
- Accidental procedure
- Basic Life Support including CPR
- Choking and care of the unconscious casualty
- Management and treatment of wounds and bleeding
- Management and treatment of fractures, strains, sprains and dislocations
- Common medical emergencies
- Basic casualty management and care
- Equipment/kits and their use
The emphasis relates to potential incidents and challenges in sporting environments including land, water, low and medium altitude, indoor and outdoor, natural and synthetic, formal and informal environs. Hill Walkers – Emergency Care and Rescue Skills
This is a 32 hour course over 2 weekends and is suitable for those in hill walking and/or hill rescue. Course contents include all the elements of the Level 1 core course in addition to:
- Adult Basic Life Support
- Introduction to the use of Automatic External Defibrillators
- Outdoor safety
- Water Safety and Emergency Care
- Casualty Management
- Outdoor Rescue equipment and its use
