Active 8

The Active 8 programme, which is aimed at teenage girls, has been designed by the Health Promotion Department of the Health Service Executive Southern Area and has been piloted successfully in other areas. The programme involves the completion of a personal Activity Journal and a weekly group activity session with a mentor. On completion of the 8 week programme participants will attend an Achievement Day.

The programme was piloted for 10 weeks from mid September to the end of November 2006. In all 20 inactive teenage girls from 2 secondary schools in Macroom participated in the programme. Since the end of the programme all of the girls have become more active and are all continuing to use the programme time to take part in physical activity such as “teen gym” in the Macroom Community Leisure Centre.

The programme is to be rolled out again in September.
