Women in Sport
The following programmes and initiatives by the County Cork Local Sports Partnership are aimed at increasing the involvement of women in sport and physical activity.
Cork “Meet and Train” – Cork Women Getting Active.
The Cork Ladies Mini Marathon was the catalyst for the “meet and train” initiative. Each year hundreds of women take part in the mini marathon, mostly to raise funds for deserving charities but also to be a part of what is a fantastic fun and social event. The Health Promotion Department of the Health Service Executive Southern Area and County Cork Local Sports Partnership recognized the potential to build on this success and decided to set up “meet and train” groups. These groups will facilitate women coming together to increase their fitness levels and have fun in preparation for the event.
FitWalk Clinic
During the FitWalk Clinic participants enjoy the practical experience of learning various walking techniques such as ‘Stride Walking’, ‘Power Walking’ and ‘Nordic Walking’. Participants learn how to get the most aerobic fitness and fat burning benefits from their walk using these techniques. Training also involves learning joint mobilizing exercise to do before walking and stretches to complete afterwards.
